Keelboat sailing gives students the ultimate learning
We have been running our new “Discover Sailing” Keelboat courses throughout this summer and it’s been fun, exciting and most of all successful. Our New Flying Tiger 10m sports yacht has proven to be the right decision. We have found the students coming through the course have had an accelerated learning experience. Why you ask? The Flying Tiger yacht is so responsive. Sailing is all about the “feel”. When you hope on the rail and hike, the yacht responds quickly, when you pull on the sheets or let them off, the yacht responds instantly. This gives you instant results as to did you pull on or let off enough and did you do it the right way.
Often when students learn, the mind can be overloaded and tires easily in the learning state. With this modern yacht, the yacht will give you the results immediately, so the trainer / skipper does not need to correct as you feel it yourself. This way you are learning with your own “feel” and not just being “told”. Works well for those who are independent and like to do things their way. Of course, if you like the constant feedback from the trainer than also happens.
Did you know your unconscious mind processes over 90,0000 thoughts per day…..how many of those thoughts are you aware of? Whilst learning on the tiger, it’s imperative you are present and aware of all the surroundings….This is a great training skill also to help align you with your mind. When you are on the Tiller or the Mainsheet….there is not too much time to let your mind drift away….being present is critical. By learning how to be present, not only will it help you improve your sailing, it will have an impact into your life, career, relationships health etc. We often work on the level of “unconscious pilot”….driving the car, we don’t give much thought to changing lanes, changing the gears, talking etc, cooking…we just grab the ingredients and make our meals, talking….some of us have that skill refined and can talk to the “cows come home”….learning on the flying tiger 10m will have a profound effect also…the level of sailing you will achieve will become part of your unconscious behaviour. It will stay in your mind quicker and longer than potentially other types of yachts.
- It’s a well known fact that dinghy sailors make better yachties. Yachties sailors do not make better dinghy sailors. So either learning on a dinghy will be really ideally a great choice or if you don’t like to get wet, getting capsized…then learning on the Flying Tiger is the next step.

“Best views: See Sydney simply, simply sail!” Reviewed 2 October 2012 NEW
My girlfriend and I have been living in Sydney for 4 years now and live a stones throw from the water, each year we’ve said we will give sailing a go next year. Recently she took the initiative and booked us in for a ‘try sail’ with Topsides Up and we had the most wonderful afternoon out on the harbour with Hank and Maree- who were informative, entertaining and patient hosts. No experience necessary, you can get as hands on as you like and feel comfortable with or just relax a little and watch the world go by, and slung over the rail of the flying tiger offers a fantastic vantage point to do just that! We have friends and family heading out every summer and it’s great to have a new activity we can introduce them to. Forget the bridge climb: walk or cycle over it (It’s free), failing that climb the pylon ($15) and use the money you save to go sailing! Can’t recommend Topsides up, the experience and both Hank and Maree enough- great work!

“Exciting Day on the water” Reviewed 1 October 2012 NEW
Hank and Marie are both very friendly and obviously very enthusiastic and passionate about what they do. We went as a group of 6 and had a wonderful time. We all got a chance to to handle the mainsheet and the winching. Hank was very patient in explaining how everything works and how to recognize the direction of the wind based on patterns on the water and other boats. It almost made me want to take up sailing! Marie also took many pictures while we were on the boat, which I am looking forward to seeing on their facebook page. I would definetely recommend them to anybody, specially any of my friends who come to Sydney and want to try their hand at sailing. Thank you

“Excellent first sailing experience” Reviewed 27 September 2012 NEW
I was a student on the beginners try sail, on the Flying Tiga. It was a brilliant day! Hank and Michelle answered all my questions without making me feel clueless, and were very encouraging. We were able to get involved in the winching and took control of the mainsheet. I felt that the skippers really wanted to share their enthusiasm of sailing and made me feel comfortable from the minute I stepped on the boat. Thank you for a lovely Sunday, I recommend this to all and now can’t wait to try the Twilight sailing too!
Our students are excited and even surprised by how much they learnt and how much fun they had.
Can’t swim….no problem look at our students learning the points of sail, all happy and safe
Why is a Flying Tiger considered one of the best keelboat yachts to learn to sail on?
Our Flying Tiger “Tiga” in only a few years old and is based on the latest design of yacht designs. Flying Tigers are extremely responsive to each move each person makes on the yacht, from the tiller to the mainsail to the jib, genoa or spinnaker. Each person who takes a role on the yacht will feel the impact of their adjustements. The tiger can be looked as a big dinghy!
With the tiger, being a light and fast sports boat, you will learn quickly the wind direction, points of sail as well as sailing basis’s up to advanced levels.
She has a tiller instead of a wheel, which allows you to feel every movement and twitch the yacht makes. The yacht mainsheet is operated from a cockpit on a traveller, again when you adjust the mainsheet you get instant feedback from the yacht did you move the mainsail in the right direction.

Topsides Up Sailing Crew Monday Twilight Race 1 CYCA
Topsides Up Sailing Crew had a start to remember. Not only was it the first race for the Monday night Twilight, but we somehow (hate to admit it) but we got our start time wrong. We thought it was a 6pm start and we found out at 5.20pm as we were picking up some crew from the CYC that it was a 5.30pm start. Well it was a made dash to get the 3 guys (Leon, Pete and Danny) onboard in the fastest way and head straight to the start line. Unfortunately Michelle and Beth who were told to be there at 5.30 were left behind. But….Beth did not want to miss the start and she did an amazing courageous act to get to our yacht.
We want to thank our crew for doing an amazing job on day 1 and to active a great result, with getting our Flying Tiger “Tiga” up to 15.8 knots.
Watch the video that caught the action of her attempt to get onto our yacht whilst we were already racing! The Water Police saw she missed our yacht for pick up and offered to take her out to us…..In hindsight looking back, Beth said it was pretty dangerous, but the excitement at the time was amazing. It turns out as Beth made in onboard we just crossed the start line, so we were disqualified….but still we took it as a few training day with the new crew.
We look forward to having a full crew next week, being ready for the start and completing the race without getting disqualified.
A big thanks to the entire crew: Hank (skipper), Leon (mainsheet), Ty (sewer/mast), Beth (foredeck), Danny (trimmer), Pete (pit, ballast) and Maree who filmed the entire event.
Flying Tiger Tiga 1st race - photos by Sport Sailing Photography
Topsides Up Sailing School took their Flying Tiger 10 Tiga out for her first training day on Saturday, held by North Sails and RANSA.
Apart from the weather being a little overcast and drizzling, all the crew had a great time. We practiced with 9 starts against the other Tiger’s.
As a Sailing School in Sydney, we offer 3 hour try sailing lessons and then we offer lean to sail courses.
On our training day we had Ben Moles, who only did his first 3 hour Try Sail with us the previous weekend. Ben showed enthusiasm and potential skill, so he was invited along for the training day. Ben is now about to attend our first Twilight Race with the CYC (cruising yacht club) sydney for the beginning of the Wednesday night Twilight racing series. Thanks Ben, your strength, speed and agility with the trimming and hanging on the rail was great. We look forward to having you onboard and also Femke. Femke who also had a keen interest in sailing and did so well on the mainsheet as well as trimming and hiking on the rail and will be joining us for our first Twilight racing night this wednesday 10th Oct 2012.

Stephanie Surace was our foredeck and had only been on a yacht for the first time this winter to assist Hank Beyer as a deckie on our other yacht Carpe Diem, 38ft luxury hunter yacht, used for Private Charters and overnight romantic packages, plus a few try sailing and points of sail lessons. Stephanie stepped up the entire day, she put her fear behind and gave it all she had, she did an awesome job and proved she has a place on the Twilight racing team.
Lynn May who has hopped around yachts for many years, (mostly in the warmer climates) also did a fantastic job being in the sewer, pulling the spinnaker in and out and getting around on the yacht and hiking on the rail. Lynn probably had the hardest job from getting one side to the other and she has badges of honour with a few mighty bruises. Well done Lynn.
Maree Zimny was in the Pit….great place to be and lots going on. Was totally overwhelmed and couldn’t even understand basic instructions, but had a ball…..After the day, our awesome coach Michelle Gilfoyle gave me a good run through with an example of trimming with a serviette, knife and fork and a couple of glasses at the pub afterwards make complete sense.
Avi was our trimmer, Avi has learnt to sail mostly on J24′s and did the job well. I think the sports boat was a little different to what he has sailed before, and of course Michelle and Hank would have to be two of the most competitive people I know and once the horn sounds its all about winning! Thanks Avi, you did a great job under the demanding pressure placed on you as Hank played cat and mouse with the other Tigers out there on Sydney Harbour.

Michelle Gilfoyle was fantastic at teaching the crew the crouching tiger positions, not on the rail but between the rail and cabin, this gave us the ability to react quickly for the cat and mouse games at the start line of which Hankfound it exciting, fun and great mind games with the other yachts.
Hank Beyer our Skipper was happy to be at the helm, playing his mind games, whilst Michelle did all the rest with keeping her eyes on the very novice crew, repeating her instructions to do our best in this training day.
We had a great day, we broke a couple of starts and we even made it around the 1st marker first! Our Tiga is fast, and we hope to improve as the season begins.
So if you want to join Topsides Up Sailing School for some racing and you think you have the enthusiasm and passion, give Hank a call on 0414 945 660 or email hank@topsidesup.com
If you are a novice or beginner, come along to our Try Sail first for 3 hours of fun and then let’s see where you can go from there.
We also want to take the opportunity to thank Beth Morley from Sport Sailing Photography for going out in those wet conditions and taking a few pictures of the event, which I have posted here. Thanks Beth for this pictures and for allowing us to use them.
